Male Infertility
To fertilize an egg, it only takes one sperm. But, there are many hurdles that the sperm have to jump over to reach the egg. Many sperm do not finish the journey and that is why it takes a high count of motile sperm to achieve fertilization. In addition, once the egg is fertilized, the quality of the DNA in the sperm has to be good for the embryo to keep dividing and form a healthy fetus.
At our fertility center here in Las Vegas, we are able to evaluate all aspects of male infertility and we have close relationships with urologists who are very experienced in helping to solve male fertility problems. There is a great deal of research going on in male infertility right now. Over the past five to seven years, researchers have found that sperm are not as simple as once thought and that sperm quality can have a major impact on fertility success.
When a couple is experiencing infertility, approximately 30% - 40% of the time, it is a problem with the male partner that is causing their infertility. The causes of male infertility can be broken down into 3 categories:

What can be done?
There are many things that can be done to help out with low sperm counts and motility issues. Sometimes men have varicoceles, which are clusters of blood vessels around their testicles. The testicles do not like to be warm and all of those blood vessels warm up the testicles and reduce the sperm count. Surgical removal of the varicocele can drastically change sperm counts. Some men who have had vasectomies and subsequent vasectomy reversals have problems with motility.
As mentioned above, there are treatments that we can perform at our fertility center to overcome that. This is called "IVF with ICSI." The eggs are retrieved from the female and then a poorly motile sperm is injected directly into the egg, thus fertilizing the egg. A semen analysis with zero motile sperm indicates a high likelihood of needing a sperm donor. We have excellent consulting urologists here in Las Vegas who can assist you with determining your options.
